Saturday evening and we have once again arrived in Aberdeen, this time for the 25th Charter Celebrations of Westhill & District in the Holiday Inn Westhill. We were greeted at the door by the ever smiling PDG Bill Leslie and Mary along with President Alan Archibald and Moira. The room was magnificent with a wonderful atmosphere and ambiance which welcomed the 200 or so guests from many clubs throughout the Aberdeen area and further afield. The clubs twin club from Jutland in Denmark the Rotary Club of Ikast was well represented by a large contingent of Rotarian's and partners. Once again were subjected to the sheer torture!! of yet another magnificent meal with endless supply of good wine. With President Alan doing a great job in the chair for the evening, we were in for a memorable night. My role this time was the reply to Ikast President Karsten Rasmussen's toast to Rotary International. The keynote speaker was non other than Steve Robertson MBE who was part of the incomparable Scotland The What Team with Buff Hardy and George Donald. He entertained all with his wonderful stories and sketches from his long career in stage and television. To all of you in the Rotary Club of Westhill please accept a sincere thank you from Rita and myself for a very memorable evening.

The Rotary Club of Leven 70th Charter Dinner

Friday 17th April sees us in Lundin Links Old Manor Hotel to help Celebrate the 70th birthday of the Rotary Club of Leven. We were given our usual friendly welcome from the team as we arrived. President Al Fleming and Val welcomed us to the club for what was to be a superb evening. After another magnificent meal (I have managed to keep my weight under control much to the amazement of she that must be obeyed) the festivities began. Lord Lieutenant Margaret Dean proposed the Toast to Leven with the reply being given by PDG John Clark. My toast to Rotary International was followed by John Anderson's reply. The keynote speaker for the evening was non other than Jim McColl of Beechgrove Garden fame who entertained us as only he can do. I had the great privilege to present three Paul Harris Fellowships to three stunned gentlemen who have a total of over sixty years service to Rotary between them. My dear friend PP Rai Valente was the first recipient along with PP Rev Jaimie Templeton and IPP John Anderson. After all three had been given time to catch their breath the vote of thanks was given by PE Harry Keddie. A great evening, Rita and I thank all of you once again for having us there to help celebrate this milestone.

The Rotary Club of Stornoway 50th Charter Dinner

Saturday 11th of April and we are in the lovely Isle of Lewis for the 50th Charter Celebrations of The Rotary Club of Stornoway. After a nice short flight from Edinburgh we arrived on Lewis to be met at the airport by club secretary Kenneth, who took us to our hotel. As the rest of the day was ours Kenneth kindly gave us the use of his car, which allowed Rita and I to tour around part of the island. The evenings proceedings were superb with a drinks reception followed by a magnificent dinner. President Jane and Allan kept us well entertained for the whole of the evening. I was very privileged to present three worthy recipients with Paul Harris Fellowships, all three were non Rotarian's and were members of RNLI in Stornoway. They have played a very important part in making the seas around the Western Isles a safer place. Sunday saw us attend a very uplifting church service in St Columbus Church with Sunday lunch provided by Jane's mother and father at their home, a very pleasant afternoon. A further trip around another part of the island followed courtesy of Jane and Allan culminating with us arriving back at the airport for our return flight to Edinburgh. A huge thank you to all of the members and friends for making this weekend a very special one for Rita and me.

District 1100 Conference Hotel De France Jersey

Another week in the hectic life of the DG, its a hard life especially when you have to travel to Jersey in the middle of spring!! Rita and I were delighted to have been invited as guests of District Governor David Fenwick and his wife Sheila from District 1100 down there in the South West corner of England. David being a fellow Scot invited all three of the Scottish District Governors and their partners, a Celtic take over. District 1100 have a few exiled Scots in their midst so needless to say a great weekend was had by all. The keynote speakers for the conference were none other than General Sir Mike Jackson and the noted corespondent and broadcaster Martin Bell who, I have to say are two of the most amazing speakers I have had the privilege to have listened to. A truly memorable weekend indeed with great fun and friendship that will be difficult to surpass.

Outgoing GSE Team Presentation

Today saw Rita and I travel north to Pitlochry to Fishers Hotel to meet our outgoing GSE Team lead by Rotarian Jim Slater from Dunfermline Carnegie Club. The many guests assembled were treated to a rather splendid presentation from the all male team of Chris Wiles, Roger Bond, Eric Davidson and Callum Ramsay. They gave a very good account of their planned trip and I am sure will be a team of which the District can be proud, they will indeed be worthy ambassadors. Rita and I wish them well and look forward to hearing the account of their very special time in Pennsylvania District 7280 USA.

Rotary Club of Dunfermline 87th Anniversary Dinner

Thursday 5th March saw me attending the 87th Charter Dinner of the Rotary Club of Dunfermline. With an attendance of over 50 Rotarians the evening was indeed a great celebration of achievement for the club. President Tom Arnott was our host for this rather auspicious night with three of the Presidents from the local surrounding clubs. The evening began with a very nice meal and some friendly chat before I was asked to propose a toast to the club. The main speaker of the evening was Sandy Morris a well know businessman in Dunfermline and a great friend of the club, Sandy was as usual extremely entertaining and very funny; an excellent night was had by all.

Rotary Club of Central Buchan

Wednesday evening the 4th March saw me travel up to the North East corner of the District to Central Buchan for the Inaugural Meeting of the first new Rotary Club of this year. It is every District Governors dream to get a new club up and running in his or her year in office. The hard work of Past District Governors Bill Leslie, Bill Wood and Ron McKail came to fruition when the club finally was brought into the family of Rotary. Twenty four members were presented with their membership packs led by their first president Donald Taylor. The night was attended by over ninety Rotarians from all over the District with RIBI New Club Formation Officer PDG Tony Cotton travelling all the way from Birkenhead in Merseyside to be with us. As we were celebrating our new achievements so too was my counterpart District Governor Alan Jones was doing the same with the formation of his first new club in Cornwall. After an exchange of phone calls of congratulations we both received a call from RI Director Gordon McInally bringing congratulations from RI President DK Lee and Rotary International. A superb night of fun and fellowship was had by all, a night to remember.

Rotary Young Chef Competition

On Sunday 1st of March Rita and I had the pleasure of attending the District Final of the Young Chef Competition which was held in Dundee College Kingsway Campus. The competition was split into two session a morning and afternoon session. The day began at 9:30 am with the arrival of the morning session competitors who would begin to prepare for the competition. They had two hours to prepare a table setting for two people, prepare their food which was a three course meal, cook and serve and all for the princely sum of no more than £14.00. The competition was extremely fierce with competitors coming from as far away as Ullapool in the North to Dunfermline in the South. Contestants as young as 13years of age took part. After a break for some well earned rest for the judges the second session began at 13:00 with the competition looking to be even fiercer. All in all 15 youngsters took part, they produced some mouth watering dishes and gave us t6he judges many hard decisions to make. By 15:30 all was complete and we had our winner who was Ian Robertson from Auchmuty High School Glenrothes, Ian will go on now next weekend to the RIBI regional final in Whitley Bay in the North of England.

Rotary Club of Forfar International Night

I had the great pleasure of attending the Rotary Club of Forfar on Wednesday evening. The club have recently moved from being a lunch meeting to an evening meeting. They are still flourishing and do not seem to have had any adverse reaction to their move. After a superb few months of mega fundraising including their amazing donation to the Ninewells Cancer Project recently, tonight saw the club present me with a cheque for £5000 which is going to their chosen International Project which is Opportunity International. Opportunity International UK is a member of the global Opportunity International Network a pioneer and global leader in providing micro finance and training to the working poor. They are the largest charity in the UK specialising in micro finance in the developing world.

District 1230 End Polio Now Exhibition

On Tuesday 24th February Rita and I attended District 1230 End Polio Now Photographic Exhibition in the Mitchell Library Glasgow. The event was well attended by Rotarian's and representatives of all of the Asian communities in Glasgow. Past District Governor Drew Hughes welcomed everyone and introduced District Governor Catherine Stewart who gave an address on our challenge of ridding the world of polio. The amazing donations from the Bill & Malinda Gates Foundation of $350,000000 is indeed helping to achieve our goal of a polio free world by 2012. The exhibition portrayed many harrowing images and stories coupled with an equal amount of success stories and images from India, Pakistan, Nigeria and Afghanistan.

Rotary Club of Anstruther Annual Dinner Dance

On Friday 20th of February Rita and I attended the annual dinner dance of the Rotary Club of Anstuther in the Craws Nest Hotel. The evening was once again a great success enjoyed by all concerned with great music to trip the light fantastic along with a spot of Music from the Shows provided for us by Anstruther Operatic Group. It was especially enjoyable for Rita and I seeing many old friends. President William Duncan and Margaret were our hosts for the evening, when we were able to reminisce about our time together as wild Round Tablers. A superb evening, with good food, good wine and great hospitality, thank you William and Margaret and all of the members and guests for a very memorable night.

Woodmill Interact Club Charter

Thursday the 5th February was a very special evening for me as Rita and I had the pleasure of attending the second Interact Charter of this Rotary year. The Interact Club of Woodmill are based in Woodmill High School Dunfermline, the club were sponsored by the Rotary Club of Dunfermline Carnegie. Since formation they have set about doing many activities, the largest and most ambitious being the manufacture of Eco Friendly cotton bags. The club members manufactured enough bags to raise £1000 for our School4All project. The members presented Jo Pike of Leonard Cheshire International with a cheque on this auspicious evening. The members have also been asked by RIBI President Ian Thomson to address our forthcoming RIBI National Conference in Edinburgh in April. Rector Mike Gilmour is justly proud of the youngsters who are a credit to all concerned with the club.

School 4 All

It's me once more, as well as being busy with our Polio Campaign the other project close to my heart is our School 4 All project in Uganda. I have informed you all that we have a unique opportunity to really put our mark as a District on something immensely worth while and life changing for many. We have the opportunity to make that difference to over 2000 children who desperately need our help. As recently as Saturday I received pictures and information from our grants officer Cath Chorley detailing the requirements of our school Budaka FHP in the Pallisa District of Uganda. The current status is as follows Budaka FHP has 2,252 pupils and 26 teachers, like all of the schools Budaka FHP has poor and inadequate classroom blocks and is in a very poor state of repair. Classrooms are overcrowded having around 100-120 pupils per class with children seated on the floor. This has been one of the barriers witnessed to teaching inclusion of disabled children. Some children trek as long as five kilometres to school as a result of lack of transport facilities. Existing ramps are dangerously erected so much so that injury could be caused by them. Teachers have a lack of understanding about disability issues and inclusive education. Excluded children do not receive any support and therefore do not have access to education at all. Shortly our District International Chairman Ken Paterson will be updating you all as to the requirements. My thanks to all of the clubs that have already sent funds to District Treasurer. I would be grateful for all others committed to this project to send monies to Jim.

Polio Eradication

Just to refute any allegations of me having flown the country, no such luck I am still here and still busy. One area that requires my devoted attention is the coordination of this Districts commitment to the Gates Foundation $100,000000 Polio Challenge. I along with Stephen Chorley your Foundation Chairman are committed to ensuring that the clubs in this District play their part in ridding the world of this terrible disease. Those of you who attended our District Conference will know how I feel about this scourge that still exists. In any case the bottom line is we are committed to doing our level best to finish the job we began in 1983 and is now almost completed. Fellow Rotarian's I have given RI our commitment to provide $10,000 per year over the next three years to finish the job. Shortly you will see a Polio Goal chart appear on our website which will show where we are and where we need to be by the end of June. I am counting on you all to help me, these little children in India. Nigeria, Pakistan and Afghanistan are counting on you, please don't let them down get your pledges and donations in to District Treasurer Jim as soon as you can. Lets MAKE DREAMS REAL and allow the children of the world to have a life.

Rotary Club of Dundee Camperdown (Visit No 86)

Tuesday the 6th January saw me perform my final club visit to Rotary Club of Dundee Camperdown in the Invercarse Hotel Dundee. I was once again made very welcome by President Ron MacWalter and the members. Having recently had the pleasure of opening the clubs International Day it was indeed nice to be back with them. The Rotary Club of Dundee Discovery had a good turn out of members on a club visitation, they were my first club visit and here they were at my last one, gluttons for punishment possibly. After a very nice meal my address was well received and prompted a few questions. The club are certainly very busy at present doing many worthwhile projects within their local community and further afield. Shelter Box is a project that the club support enormously well with most of the funds raised at their International Day going to them.

My Big Surprise

On Tuesday 16th December Rita and I had the great pleasure of attending my own clubs Christmas Party which was only my second visit to the club since taking over as District Governor. It was indeed a very special evening as we were honouring a local lady Margaret Sutherland with our annual Citizen of the Year Award. Margaret runs the local shop in the village of Dunshalt and for many years now she has been a stalwart in community service within the village, a well deserved award. However the evening turned out to be very special for me too as I was honoured by the club with a Paul Harris Fellowship. It is seldom that I am lost for words but this was indeed the exception. I have to say that I was overwhelmed and very emotional at being honoured in such a way. I am extremely proud and humbled to be District Governor of District 1010 with my year in office at the halfway mark, this honour has made 2008 a very special year for both Rita and me. To president Graeme and my fellow members of the Howe of Fife my heartfelt thanks to you all for this wonderful surprise.

Rotary Club of West Fife (Visit No 85)

Tuesday evening took me out to Crossford to the Pitfirrane Arms Hotel home of the Rotary Club of West Fife. It was indeed great to visit the club once again and to meet many old friends. My address was preceded by a cheque presentation to a representative from CHAS in Kinross for £2000 raised earlier in the year from the clubs annual AM AM Golf Competition. I was given a surprise gift from PP Ian Boreland of the official tie and badge from the Canada Curling Tour, thank you Ian. Once again the members are very active both locally and internationally with their regular donations to local organizations such as CHAS and international projects such as Nyambani Village Project when they raised enough money to provide a house within the village. A superb club with committed Rotarian's constantly serving others. I will certainly enjoy working with the club during this Rotary year. Thank you all for a great evening. Howe of Fife Conference Team Get Together

It was a very special day for Rita and I on Sunday as we were able to personally thank the members of my own Rotary Club for their amazing contribution to making our 58th District Conference the great success that it was. We were privileged to have Andrew and Aileen Kennedy allowing us to meet in their lovely home, not only that but provide us with a delicious meal as well, my sincere thanks to you both. The team worked tirelessly over a period of nearly two years to ensure that all went well when the time came. Thank you all for making my year in office an unforgettable experience. Of course we did have the guidance of our District Conference Chairman Stewart Wilson without who's help we would never have managed. Rita and I are very lucky to have had your support, once again thank you all.

Rotary Club of Dundee Camperdown International Day

Saturday saw Rita and I head for Invergowrie to officially open the Rotary Club of Dundee Camperdown's International Day. The day began with a Coffee Morning in the church hall which attracted a full house of Rotarian's and local participants. On arrival we were met by Rev Robert Ramsay and non other than a great friend Rotarian Ron McCabe. President Ron MacWalter said a few words informing all present of the clubs intentions for the day which was the Coffee Morning followed by a Sponsored Walk and culminating in a Silent Auction with all of the money raised going towards deserving international causes including Shelter Box. If the Coffee Morning was anything to go by they will indeed have a very successful day. Rita and I enjoyed the experience, thank you all for a great morning.

Rotary Club of Blairgowrie 61st Charter Dinner

It was a great pleasure to be invited as principle speaker on this evening of celebration. The club have been in existence for 61 years and have certainly shown true Service Above Self throughout their existence. Last year was an example of what can be achieved when the club raised and distributed over £21,000 to local and international deserving causes. Rita and I were privileged to have been part of this great evening and enjoyed the experience. May you continue to do what Rotarian's do best, please accept my best wishes for the future. Once again thank you all for a superb evening.

Rotary Club of Montrose (Visit No 84)

It is still Tuesday and I have made my way up to Montrose for my final club visit of the week. Before attending the club meeting I visited the new premises of Rotarian Robert Ritchie the shop is magnificent to say the least, so if you are looking for Hi-Fi or TV this is the place to go. (there you go Robert a free plug) Once again on my arrival at the George Hotel the welcome was superb president John Fraser and many of the members were there to greet me. After the meal it was back on my feet for my address, which was followed by some questions from some of the members. The club are certainly very busy with much preparation for their local Christmas community event which is a Christmas Tree Competition which has proven to be very popular in the past with many amazing trees being entered. Of course the club are justly proud of the Nyambani Village Project run by Alison Stedman who has just returned from Kenya after seeing some of the families housed in their new houses in the village. Once again a superb club that District 1010 can be proud of.

Rotary Club of Claverhouse (Visit No 83)

My first visit of this week was back to Dundee to the Queens Hotel for the weekly meeting of the Rotary Club of Claverhouse. A rather special welcome awaited me on my arrival, President Stewart Davidson presented me with two cheques. The first one was for the Rotary Foundation with the second one for Polio Plus a big thank you to the club for their generous gesture. Once again I was very privileged to address another club with a huge commitment to all things Rotary. Gentlemen thank you all for your hospitality and your generosity. I look forward to working with you all during 2008-9

Alloa Grand Ball

Rita and I had the great pleasure of attending the Rotary Club of Alloa Grand Ball on Friday 7th November. The venue was the rather captivating Alloa Town Hall a superb venue with many of the original features still intact. President Jim Keenan and Neina welcomed everyone to this annual occasion which has now become one of the clubs main events and fundraiser. The evening was indeed a great success with a large number of Rotarian's partners and guests from all around the Alloa area. A great night of fun and friendship was enjoyed by all, I extend a very warm thank you to Jim, Neina and the members for inviting us to be with them.

Rotary Club of Dunfermline (Visit No 82)

My final visit this week took me to the Garvock House Hotel home of the Rotary Club of Dunfermline one of our oldest and larger clubs. With a great turn out from members plus a few visitors the evening proved to be very enjoyable indeed. I felt very at home amongst many familiar faces and friends made over the years. After my address it was great to hear the clubs newest member give her Vocational Talk which proved to be one of the best I have had the pleasure to hear. Jillian McKay will be I am sure a credit to the club, a young lady with a very definite passion for her chosen career. The club are once again in good spirit with much going on both locally and most certainly Internationally. President Tom Arnott is extremely enthusiastic about the clubs aspirations and projects and I am sure the club will have another superb year. Thank you all for a very enjoyable evening.

Rotary Club of Carnoustie (Visit No 81)

My third visit of the week took me to a rather wind swept Tay coast to Carnoustie and the wonderful welcoming surroundings of the Station Hotel. The club have met there since they were formed back in 1956 I could understand why. The venue is one of the most welcoming I have had the pleasure to visit, the members were indeed very pleased to see me with President Hamish Leslie in the chair. The club have indeed got a new lease of life and are proud to boast four new members with a further four on the horizon, great news. After one of the best meals I have sampled (yes I have had a few and the waistline is still not expanding) my address was very warmly received. The club are committed to all things Rotary and is a shining example this year of "flying in the face of adversity" so to speak, keep up the good work guys. It will be my pleasure to work with you all.

Rotary Club of Fraserburgh (Visit No 80)

The second visit of the week took us to the Rotary Club of Fraserburgh right across on the North East Coast. The club meet in Findlay's Hotel in Fraserburgh and enjoy very comfortable surroundings for their meeting. As president Margaret-Jane was unable to attend due to work commitments the meeting was in the capable hands of Past President Dennis Duthie. Once again a long established very nice little club who are very busy in their local community and also Internationally. Rita and I most certainly enjoyed the warm welcome we received and wish the club continued success for the year ahead.

Rotary Club of Buckie (Visit No 79)

The first visit of the week took Rita & I up to Buckie, after a very picturesque drive we arrived just in time to visit the club who meet in the Marine Hotel. President Jeanette Brown and many of the members were there to greet us. After a nice meal I gave my address to the club who have already agreed to be involved with most of the emphasis this Rotary year. A nice little club who once again are doing what Rotary clubs do best continual Service Above Self. I would also like to congratulate the club on their recent very successful Charter Evening of which Rita and I were unable to attend due to a prior engagement.

Rotary Club of Stirling (Visit No 78)

Well its the end of a working week once more and I am visiting our only Friday club the Rotary Club of Stirling who meet in the Golden Lion Hotel. I have special links with the club and many of its members who I have known for some time now. It was great to meet up with them all again especially Stewart Anderson who presented me with his latest CD called Mostly Scottish and features Stewart on accordion and Bob Christie on fiddle who have been playing since they were boys. There was a super turn out from members who were pleased to say Yes to me and inform me that they had already raised £1500 for Polio Plus, thank you all for a really enjoyable time, it was great to see you all again.

Rotary Club of Blairgowrie (Visit No 77)

Wednesday has dawned and on a fresh crisp winters day I set of for my visit to The Rotary club of Blairgowrie. The club meet in the Angus Hotel in the heart of the town, I was met at the door by President Dennis Crofts and several of the members. After a welcome drink and chat at the bar it was time to eat again (and yes the waistline is still bearing up) After a nice lunch my address was heard by a very enthusiastic membership who seemed to like what they heard. Blairgowrie are one of the shining examples in our District with their superb efforts and support of our Rotary Foundation with givings last year of over £3000 a marvelous effort which I am hoping they will sustain this year. I look forward to seeing them all again when I speak at their 61st Charter in November.

Rotary Club of Crieff (Visit No 76)

My first club visit of this week was to the Rotary Club of Crieff in the cosy surroundings of the Crieff Hotel. I was made to feel very welcome by the members on my arrival on a rather cold winters evening. President David Smart introduced me and after a very welcome hot meal I was on my feet once more for my address. The club though small is striving to find ways of increasing their membership and are very active in the local community. I look forward to hearing of their success in membership efforts during the ensuing months ahead. One of our well established clubs with its members continuing to work hard on many Rotary projects.

District 1020 Conference (Inverness)

Friday has come around, after seeing President Ian and Joan off at Edinburgh Airport would you believe we are back up in Inverness this time for my friend DG Alasdair Seale's Conference District 1020 Scotland South. We have arrived in the Headquarters Hotel which is the Drumossie on the outskirts of Inverness with the main conference taking place in Eden Court Theatre. Friday evening we were wined and dined before attending a superb concert by The West Enders an amazing act from London who entertained us with songs from the West End Musicals and more. Saturday was equally as good with a great conference session throughout the day with the principle speaker being Rt Hon Michael Portillo who was highly entertaining and a wonderful figurehead for his chosen charity DebRA. The weekend entertainment culminated with a ball in The Thistle Hotel with three different bands in three areas of the hotel. Sunday rounded off the great weekend with a final conference session and lunch on a boat cruise on Loch Ness. A great weekend of fun and fellowship, thank you all in District 1020 for giving us a weekend to remember.

RIBI Presidents District Visit (Day 3) Continued

After leaving Perth we were once again on our way North this time to Aberdeen for another joint meeting with almost all of the Aberdeen and surrounding clubs represented. Once again we were privileged to be given another Civic Reception and welcomed to the city by Lord Provosts representative Councilor Jennifer Stewart. The venue was the Northern Hotel which is one of the original 1920 art deco buildings in Aberdeen and is host to two clubs St Machar and St Nicholas much of the existing art deco features still remain. It was a superb evening with a totally amazing turn out from all of the clubs, a fitting send off for Ian and Joan. A very heartfelt thanks to Alan Pirie and his team from St Machar and Assistant Governor Ewan Hatchwell for their assistance in organising the evening.

RIBI Presidents District Visit (Day 3)

Having had some time to relax in the lovely surroundings of Lochardil House Hotel we set of back South once more this time to Perth McDiarmid Park home of St Johnston Football Club for a joint lunch time meeting of the Perth Rotary Clubs. Once again a great turnout from many clubs including Perth, Perth St Johns, Perth Kinnoull, Pitlochry, Blairgowrie and Bridge of Allan & Dunblane. After a very enjoyable meal and some very friendly chat RIBI President Ian gave his address which once again was extremely well received and enjoyed by all present.

RIBI Presidents District Visit (Day 2) Continued

A superb joint meeting of all of the Inverness and surrounding area Rotary Clubs was held in Lochardil House Hotel to welcome RIBI President Ian Thomson to the area. All inverness clubs were represented plus, Elgin, Nairn, East Sutherland, Forres, Dingwall all in attendance. The event was jointly hosted by the four Inverness Clubs with each President taking part in the proceedings. A superb evening was had by all with RIBI President Ian's address being exceptionally well received, the evening was topped off by a cheque presentation to Ian for both School4All and Polio Plus for over £4000 which was an amazing effort from all concerned.

RIBI Presidents District Visit (Day 2)

It's day two of Ian's visit and we are off up to Inverness, our first duty was at Inverness Airport where all of the local clubs had the innovative idea of mounting a plaque in the arrivals hall detailing where and when they all met. Ian officially unveiled the plaque and congratulated all of the clubs on their efforts of promoting Rotary. Once again a very simple but effective public relations exercise that I am sure will reap rewards.

RIBI Presidents District Visit (Day 1)

Tuesday evening was a very special occasion for RIBI President Ian Thomson and me as we attended a joint meeting of the South Fife Clubs hosted by the Rotary Club of Dunfermline Carnegie as our first visit within the District. All of the clubs were represented along with Assistant Governors Sandy Matthew and John Brewster. A special guest from across the Forth RI Director Gordon McInally was also present. Club President Janet Lowe and the members welcomed us all to their superb meeting place the headquarters of Dunfermline Building Society. A special surprise awaited Ian in the form of a Civic Reception hosted by Provost Francis Melville Ian being a Dunfermline lad born and bred found the occasion very moving. Both Ian and myself were presented with mementos to mark the evening from Provost Melville. Ian in return presented Provost Melville with limited edition Rotary print. What a superb event, my thanks must go to Janet and her team who made the meeting something to remember.

Inverness Culloden 10th Charter Lunch

Sunday has once again come around and Rita and I have arrived in Inverness on a very special day. RI Director Gordon McInally and I were asked to speak at this very auspicious occasion to celebrate a club milestone. It is 10 years since the Rotary club of Inverness Culloden were formed on the 6th of October 1998. The Rotary Club of Loch Ness had seen the opportunity for the formation of another club in Inverness and asked District Extension Officer PDG Doug Westland ably assisted by Peter Tong to set about getting the club formed. Today the club continues to flourish and still has many of it's founder members. A true Jewel in The Crown of the District they continue to embrace the ideals of Rotary and work tirelessly within their own community and Internationally on many projects. The club saw the now successful project of the Glencalvie Challenge set up two years ago by Mike Phimister and Ian Kingorn. This annual event has raised £16000 over the last two years. With a great camaraderie between the clubs in Inverness and surrounding areas Rotary will continue to go from strength to strength. I would like to wish the members on behalf of all in District 1010 all the very best for the future, "Here's to another 10 years"

Rotary Club of St Andrews (Visit No 75)

Wednesday lunch time and I have arrived at a rather lovely picturesque St Andrews on a typical autumn day. The club now meet in the Scores Hotel overlooking the Old Course which is indeed a rather nice venue. I was greeted on my arrival by the very well organized reception team who immediately ushered me to meet with President Dennis Hopper. The club are one of our long established clubs and have around 70 members. They are very active both in the local community and in the wider world of Rotary. The club undertake each year a programme of hosting a visiting teacher from former Eastern Bloc states such as Kazakhstan to allow them to improve their understanding of our education system and provide them with a great vocational experience. Being the home of Golf it is the clubs pleasure to host the annual World Rotary Golf Competition when hundreds of Rotarian golfers from all over the world descend on St Andrews. The members seemed suitably motivated and impressed with what they heard in my address which was conveyed in the vote of thanks on behalf of the club by Past President James Murray.

Rotary Club of Burntisland & Kinghorn (Visit No 74)

My second visit of the week is to The Sands Hotel the home of the Rotary Club of Burntisland & Kinghorn. The visit has special affection for me as it was the first club I worked with in my role as Conference Production Manager back in our Centenary year. Many of the members have become good friends to both Rita and me. We were made to feel very welcome and greeted at the door by Tom Spark and most of the members. After a very nice meal President George Foster introduced me and it was once again address time. The club are a very active club especially in their own community and have many great projects under their belt such as the award winning Rotary Rambles. They have just completed their Charity Shop week which raised over £3000 even in these times of problems especially in the retail trade. A superb club with much going on, they are set for another great year.

Rotary Club of Abertay (Visit No 73)

Monday evening and I have arrived at The Woodlands Hotel in Broughty Ferry for the meeting of the Rotary Club of Abertay. Imagine my surprise when I walked through the front door of the hotel to be greeted by President Ron Learmonth and several of the members accompanied by a Dundee Courier photographer. There displayed was he clubs new publicity pull-up which I have to say is very impressive indeed. Ron presented me with a cheque for School4All for £500 and Polio Plus for £500, for which I thank them very much. The club is without doubt one of the many shining examples of Rotary we have in this District. The clubs efforts in PR are outstanding and from what I can see will be even better this year. Once again the members enjoyed my address and are certainly behind all of the emphasis for this Rotary year. Thank you all for your friendship and hospitality, a great night.

District 1200 Annual Conference Cardiff

Friday has arrived and we are down to Cardiff for the conference of District 1200. What a great weekend of fun and fellowship at the hands of our dear friends District Governor Robin and Wendy Brown. From the minute we set foot in the hotel we were treated like royalty by everyone. We were also privileged to have been hosted by Peter and Barbara Noble over the weekend, so to them also a big thank you. The conference was excellent with most of the speakers coming from Scotland what would you expect!!. I have never been to a District Conference with an entertainment line up such as we had in Cardiff. It ranged from The Drifters to the Cwmbach Male Choir and in between an superb dance band Dance the Decades who did The Beatles, Abba and Queen tribute show, it was amazing. What a talent we have in our very own RI director Gordon McInally's wife Heather who was nothing less than captivating with her amazing voice when she entertained us during the plenary sessions. Thank you all in District 1200 for a wonderful weekend.

Rotary Club of Aberdeen St Fittick 40th Charter Dinner

Thursday evening saw Rita and me head back up to Aberdeen for a very special evening. The Rotary Club of Aberdeen St Fittick were celebrating their 40th birthday. A superb evening was had by all who attended including good representation from local clubs. The keynote speakers were of the highest standard and interspersed some interesting facts about the club over the years with the obligatory humour which was in abundance. President David Alton chaired the evening with his usual wonderful wit and humor. A great night, here's to the next 40 years.

Rotary Club of Carse of Stirling (Visit No 72)

Wednesday evening and I am in The Terraces Hotel in Stirling for the weekly meeting of the Rotary Club of Carse of Stirling. What a welcome I received, I had been warned by AG Robin that these guys were a lively lot, he was certainly right. The club although still all male!! are dyed in the wool great Rotarian's through and through. They have an amazing track record for their efforts with children in the Kids Out project. They have agreed to support as much as they can this year in helping me achieve the goals of Making Dreams Real. A superb Club working very hard both locally and Internationally. Guys thanks, for a great evening it was my pleasure to be with you all even after I was fined for being The Governor of Change and therefore asked to empty my change into the Foundation cash Pig, it was worth it.

Rotary Club of Forfar (Visit No 71)

It was my great pleasure to visit the Rotary Club of Forfar for their meeting in the Royal Hotel for what could only be described as superb. I was made to feel extremely welcome by all present, it was especially pleasing to see President Jim Nicoll almost back to his normal large as life self after his accident, although still wearing a brace collar he was his usual jovial self. The club is certainly in great spirit with much going on, the have just finished a very successful Casino Night. They are once again planning to hold another Marafun which has become a trademark of the club. As well as myself we had two other Rotary guests one from Orkney and another a little further travelled from Australia.

Tuesday evening and I have arrived at the Dreadnought Hotel for the weekly meeting of The Rotary Club of Callander & West Perthshire. President Sheila Dickson and the members greeted me on my arrival. After another nice meal, some great chat I once again gave my outline for this Rotary year. All of those present were pleased to hear about the many successes that this District are achieving, coupled with the never ending commitment to Rotary service. The meeting finished with a few topical questions being asked and answered, I hope to their satisfaction. Once again another superb club who are very active both locally and Internationally especially involving youngsters, which is a perfect fit for this year.

Rotary Club of Pitlochry (Visit No 69)

Tuesday morning and I am on my way on a dreadful rainy day to Pitlochry for their weekly meeting in Fishers Hotel. The club had decided to have a frugal lunch today which I welcomed in my quest to keep the waistline increase to a minimum. Club President John Reid was there to welcome me and introduce me to the members. My address certainly seemed to be welcomed by the membership who have indicated their support for most of the emphasis this year. Once again I was very encouraged by the sheer commitment and work that the club are giving to many worthy causes. Then after some very nice hospitality from Maureen and Graham Holmes for a portion of the afternoon it was time to head to Callander to my next visit.

Laurencekirk & District (Visit No 68)

The first visit of this week took me back up North once more to visit the Rotary Club of Laurencekirk & District. The usual very warm welcome awaited me by President Douglas Lamb and the members. The club although small is extremely active both locally and Internationally, with participation in quite a few projects. One such project is the support for Schools4All in Uganda, the club have pledged to support this the chosen emphasis from RIBI President Ian Thomson. After a nice meal and some interesting chat I was back on my feet once more, the club seemed enthused by my address and asked some interesting questions afterwards. A super little club that will guarantee you a great welcome especially if you are the owner of a bottle of Johnnie Walker Blue label!!

District 1230 Conference (Perth)

Rita and I spent a great weekend in Perth as guests of District Governor Catherine Stewart and the Rotarian's of District 1230. It was an honour for us both to be present as Catherine and Jim have become very dear friends. It was what can only be described as a great conference with exceptional speakers, amazing entertainment the mandatory food of course (although the waistline is still holding up) the fun and fellowship was outstanding. I would like to take the opportunity of thanking Bruce and Kathleen MacPherson for their special weekend of friendship as our hosts, thank you both. The venue of the Perth Concert Hall was stunning, that coupled with the entertainment venue of the Dewar's Centre made for a great weekend. To all of the Rotarian's in 1230 thank you for the experience it was just great.

Rotary Club of Banff (Visit No 67)

My last visit of the week took Rita and I up to Banff Springs Hotel where the Rotary Club of Banff meet. After setting of an a pleasant afternoon we arrived on a rather rainy and wind swept night. However the warmth of the welcome and hospitality of President Gordon Masson and the club members made up for the awful weather. Once again it was a great pleasure to be able to give the members my ideals and ideas for the ensuing Rotary year. My address was well received and stirred a great amount of interest especially in the direction of Schools 4 All in Uganda with a pledge of some help with school books. The club have agreed to say yes and to achieve as many of the goals set this year.

Rotary Club of Inverkeithing & Dalgety Bay (Visit No 66)

Wednesday lunch time and I have arrived at the Bay Inn in Dalgety Bay home of the Rotary Club of Inverkeithing and Dalgety Bay. The beaming smile of David McPherson greeted me on my arrival, along with President Robin Park who introduced me to most of the members, once again it was great to meet up with many "weel kent faces". The club are currently working hard on membership and are actively promoting the club throughout the surrounding areas. It was therefore especially good to see President Robin inducted two new members today. The club had a bumper year last year on the fundraising front an are aiming to better their efforts this year. With all of our main emphasis on children the club have agreed to be involved with our nominated projects. I am sure they will once again be very successful and will have another bumper year.

Rotary Club of Inverurie (Visit No 65)

Visit number two of the week is a stones throw away from Oldmedrum it is to the Rotary Club of Inverurie. Once again it was very pleasing to meet so many old friends, some of whom I had not seen for some time. Going back to my first RIBI Assembly as a District officer I had the great privilege of meeting a fellow Fifer who was then an AG, Ian Ewan who kept me on the straight and narrow, it was great to see you again Ian. President Cath Nash along with the very enthusiastic membership were extremely welcoming and made me feel really at home. The club are involved in many superb projects both at home and Internationally, the most recent was the complete replacement of the local scout hall roof ably managed by SVP Alan. A super club, thank you all for your warm welcome and friendship.

Rotary Club of Oldmeldrum (Visit No 64)

The first visit of the week is back up to Aberdeenshire and the Rotary Club of Oldmeldrum. The club meet in the very cosy surroundings of the Redgarth Hotel. What a great welcome I received from President Anne Forster and the members, along with most of their partners. The club is one of the most active clubs in District 1010, and have won a few awards for their efforts both at District and National level. They have a hugely busy calendar with many projects and events planned this year. The recent work they had undertaken in developing a garden area in Oldmeldrum was featured on television on Saturday evening news. The event was a huge success and was opened by Jim McColl of Beechgrove Garden fame. After a great meal, some amusing banter and my address we finished the evening off with a game of Call My Bluff ably hosted by none other than Hilary Gordon. I felt really at home and was very privileged to share such great fun and friendship shown by all. I look forward to seeing them all again soon, who knows I may even get a game of cricket.

Rotary Club of Alloa (Visit No 63)

Bringing my travels to a close for this week was my visit to the Rotary Club of Alloa on Wednesday 24th September. I was greeted warmly by President Jim Keenan and the members, many of them I have known for quite some time so it was good to catch up with their news. Once again my address was well received and seemed to get the minds working. The club are very attuned to the need of the local community and are planning many high profile activities this year. President Jim presented a cheque to a community group for £500. Their commitment to International projects is also very evident. A good club, who are very much up for a challenge. I am looking forward to working with them this year.

After a pleasant visit to AG John Brewsters wonderful new home a converted church at Kirkton of Kinnettles just outside Glamis. I once again headed North for my second visit of the day. The Rotary Club of Alford and District meet in the Forbes Arms Hotel Bridge of Alford. I was greeted by a few of the Rotarian's on arrival and made to feel very welcome. President Paul Lawson introduced me to all of the members, after a nice meal I was back on my feet giving my address. The club though small are very active and involved in many projects they have certainly pledged their support for the projects this year. After a good question and answer session, the club thanked me for taking the time to visit them and welcomed me back at any time in the future. Another example of a small club very active both locally and Internationally.

Rotary Club of Kirriemuir (Visit No 61)

My first visit of this week was to the Rotary Club Kirriemuir in the Thrums Hotel. I met a few old friends who I had not seen for quite sometime, it was nice to catch up with them. AG John Brewster turned up just to ensure that I was indeed visiting the club that day, as he joked that no one had actually seen me at any of these clubs I had already visited. The club are in great spirits with President John Ray at the helm I am sure they will achieve their goals for this year. Another nice surprise was the appearance of Dr Jacqui Wood to pick up a cheque for the Cancer Research Centre at Ninewells. Once more a very welcoming club with lots going on.

Rotary Club of Aberdeen Balgownie (Visit No 60)

The last visit of the week saw me head back up to Aberdeen this time accompanied by Oliver Will from my own club as driver and me as navigator, boy did we need a navigator. The Rotary Club of Aberdeen Balgownie meet in the very nice venue of Mains of Scotstown Inn in Bridge of Don. There is however a problem if you are an outsider, its finding the place. After frequent stops and asking passers by we eventually arrived. We were certainly made to feel very welcome by all of the members, many of whom had been at conference at the weekend. President Jack Archibald introduced me, and I was back on my feet again. After my address there was an update on the conference which was enjoyed by all attending. Once again a very involved club with some great projects and initiatives going on. I look forward to working with them this year.

Rotary Club of Perth St Johns (Visit No 59)

Wednesday has arrived, after a late night of driving, some well earned rest, and some work it was time to visit one of my favourite places Perth. Once again it was the Royal George Hotel for the meeting of the Rotary Club of Perth St Johns. With a good turn out of members (even though I was speaking) I was formally introduced by President Neil Townend who welcomed me to the meeting. Food was beginning to look less inviting now, so I did not partake of much. The club welcomed my address and by all accounts found it interesting. Once again the club like most others are well and truly involved both locally and Internationally in many projects large and small. They have agreed to rise to all of the challenges in this Rotary year. Another good club with a busy agenda, with membership as a priority. The club members are looking forward to helping host the joint club meeting in October when RIBI President Ian visits Perth.

Rotary Club of Aberlour & Speyside (Visit No 58)

After a relaxing day visiting a few of the Distillery's on the Whisky Trail we arrived in Aberlour for our visit to the Rotary Club of Aberlour & Speyside. The members welcomed us to their very cosy venue of the Aberlour Hotel. After introductions to most of the members by President John Dunbar it was time to eat again!! Again the club is small but very active with plans to recruit new members this year. They continue to work closely with their mother club Elgin on some International projects. They are also pretty busy locally as well and have great links in the community including a certain distillery that has been know to provide the occasional wee dram in support of their activities. A very nice little club with great warmth shown to Rita and I (not of the liquid kind of course we had to drive home)

Rotary Club of Huntly (Visit No 57)

Monday evening saw us visit the Rotary Club of Huntly in the marvelous surroundings of the Castle Hotel set in the grounds of Huntly Castle. We were welcomed on arrival by President Raye Marcus and the members. The club though small are certainly involved at local and International level. They have embarked on a project to provide babies hats for UNICEF and had a target of 500 but are now closer to providing 5000. The hats are being knitted by volunteers within the local area. The members were pleased to have an update of what was expected this Rotary year and hoped they could rise to the many challenges. It was my pleasure to confer a much deserved honour on Rotarian Dr Roland Harvais who had previously been Treasurer for 11 years and still continues to work tirelessly for the club.

58th District Conference Aviemore 12th-14th Sept

The 58th District conference was the most rewarding experience for Rita and I. The members of my club The Howe of Fife and their partners have worked tirelessly over the past 18 months to make this event the success that it was. My heartfelt thanks to each and every one of you. The District Team contributed in the hosting of many of our guests and my trusted production team Robert Ritchie and Michael Jamieson made the presentations flow like clockwork, I thank you all. Of course Stewart Wilson our conference chairman was there to guide us all with his great knowledge and expertise, I owe him a great debt of gratitude. The speakers and the performers were outstanding and made the whole event a huge success. Of course none of this would have happened were it not for all of the Rotarian's and partners that turned out to support this great weekend. There will be a detailed coverage and report on our main website along with many great pictorial memories. Once again my heartfelt thanks to you all, I am extremely proud to be leading this District in Making Dreams Real.

The club meet in the very nice surroundings of Ramnee House Hotel. After the warm greetings from Donnie we were then met by another larger than life character in the form of club president Rene Looper with his usual friendly smile. The club members made us feel very welcome indeed with their fantastic hospitality. I had the great pleasure of welcoming a new member to the club, Wing Commander Anthony McCord who is serving with the Royal Air Force at Kinloss. The club are certainly well involved with many local and International projects. The sales continue to soar of the clubs Foundation Highland Shortbread (now available for delivery straight to your home from the factory). How's that for a plug guys, keep up the good work. Rita and I enjoyed the day with you, thank you all for your hospitality.

Wednesday evening has come around Rita and I have arrived in the lovely town of Banchory on Royal Deeside. The club meet in the Burnett Arms Hotel where we were welcomed by President David Marquardt and a very friendly group of Rotarian's. The club are well known for their hospitality, tonight was no exception. During dinner I was pleased to hear of many of the projects that the club has undertaken including the erection of a rather superb ornamental stone on the entry in to the town, welcoming all to Banchory and displaying the Rotary Wheel. The club most certainly are in tune with this years challenges and are involved in many new and existing projects at home and internationally. It was a pleasure to address such a first class team, I certainly look forward to seeing the progress of many of their efforts during this year. The club have committed to Schools 4 All and Polio Plus which are the main emphasis for 2008-9.

Wednesday has dawned and Rita and I are heading South for our visit to the Rotary Club of Stonehaven. On a lovely afternoon we arrived at the St Leonards Hotel and were greeted by President Jim Henderson and Vice President Wilma Bruce. After introductions to many of the members I was honoured to receive a cheque for £1500 for the Polio Plus initiative which was raised by the club from a single event, well done to all, a great gesture. I then had the honour of presenting IPP Mike with the Club's Presidential Citation for 2007-8 another great achievemet. Once more I delivered my address which was warmly received by all, after which I was told the club had also donated a sum of money to Schools 4 All project. They are indeed in great spirit and are continuing to develop with two new members due to be inducted. My congratulations to a great club in total tune with this years programme.

After a pleasant day of exploring the coastlines of McDuff and Banff we set out for our visit to Turriff. We arrived at the Deveron County House to be greeted by President Linda Muller and the members of the club. The club venue is rather nice with great food (yes I had to eat some more) although the waist line is still holding up. The club is in good spirit with much talk about the running of the conference in 2010-11. After the superb meal my address was once again well received by all. A short question session followed mainly on membership and attracting new young members. The club agreed to discuss the projects outlined in my address and to try and achieve the required goals. Both Rita and I enjoyed the hospitality and look forward to working with the club during the rest of this year.

Monday once more, Rita and I are again heading North this time to visit the Rotary Club of Keith. We arrived together with AG Doug Ritchie who had traveled over from Inverness to the meeting. The club meet in Ugie House Hotel where we were warmly welcomed by President John Muir and the members of the club. We also had the pleasure of welcoming a few of the members from Buckie who were on a scatter night. After a nice meal and some friendly discussions it was time to speak once more. My address was once again well received with a vote of thanks given by President John. The club though very small are determined to increase their membership and are at present working on a recruitment strategy. They have a possible new member on the sidelines at present with I hope more to follow. Rita and I enjoyed the hospitality and wish the club the very best in their endeavours.

After some great hospitality in the business premises of PDG Bill Wood for most of the afternoon, I made my way up to Kintore for my next visit. On arrival at the Torryburn Hotel I was greeted by President Alistair MacKay an several of the members. Following a good old natter in the lounge bar it was time for the meeting. I was introduced to all of the members who made me feel really welcome. I bet you can guess what was next (more food) however I only ate a half portion this time. The club outlined their plans for this Rotary year which were many and varied. Being one of our newest clubs they are indeed a great example of our changing face of Rotary. The enthusiasm is abounding which was really great to be part of. Have a great year guys it will be my pleasure to work with you all.

Thursday lunch time and I am back at the Northern Hotel in Aberdeen for the meeting of The Rotary Club of Aberdeen St Machar. On arrival I was greeted by the smiling face of Jenny Shirreffs. After many introductions to many old and some new friends it was time to eat once more!! (I still can't believe the waistline is holding up) Those of you who have sampled the food in the hotel will know it is rather good. I had the company of President Alan Pirie and getting a second helping of my address PDG Bill Wood. The club are indeed in "fine fettle" as they say with lots of projects and initiatives on the go. Thank you all for your hospitality, I look forward to the evening of Thursday 23rd October when the club will host the joint clubs meeting for RIBI President Ian's vist. Please make the effort to attend this auspicious event, it will be a superb night of fun and fellowship.

After a very pleasant drive up to Ellon I arrived at the Station Hotel to be greeted in the car park by Alasdair Campbell with his usual friendly smile. I was made very welcome by President Elleanor Macalister and the members. It was great to see PDG Doug Westland back on his feet again, although still in some discomfort. Doug I hope all goes well for you on the 12th September and the operation is a success. I look forward to seeing you when you have fully recovered. A very nice meal followed by my address was the order of the evening. The club are indeed a jewel in the crow of District 1010 with an immense portfolio of projects in place. The club will host two evenings in their hotel in Birmingham during the RI Convention in June of next year. They have an attendance in Birmingham of over seventy, a remarkable effort. Once again I look forward to working with them in 2008-9

The start of my Rotary Club visits this week began with The Rotary Club of Leven in the great surroundings of the Old Manor Hotel in Lundin Links. I was made to feel very welcome by President Al Fleming and all of the members, many of whom I have known for more years than I care to mention both in Rotary and Round Table. After a very nice meal I was just about to get to my feet to speak when President Al asked if there was any early leavers, most of the members got up to leave!!. Of course it was an organised prank by my old friend Rai Valente. After the fun finished I was asked to deliver my address, the club, I have to say have risen to the occasion and have agreed to pander to my wishes and say YES to me. A great evening with many old and some new friends, I am looking forward to working with the members throughout this Rotary year.

Wednesday 27th of August saw me attend the Inner Wheel District 1 Meeting in The Dewars Conference Centre Perth. I was welcomed by Chairman Mary Leslie and many of the ladies of Inner Wheel. After a nice meal in the company of the St Andrews ladies I was asked to address over 180 members from all over our District 1. I have to say it was the first time and probably the last that I can claim to have silenced over 180 woman!! The ladies were very interested in what we were doing in District 1010 with my short talk being well received. May I take this opportunity of thanking Mary, her team and the ladies of District 1 for their hospitality, I am looking forward to working with them all in joint service in 2008-09.

It's Tuesday evening and Rita and I are visiting my own club for the first time since taking office. We were of course very warmly welcomed by my fellow members. After our usual nice meal it was once again down to business and delivery of my address. President Elect Dennis Beattie introduced me and I was off and running, this time it was more daunting for me as I was addressing my own members, I need not have worried all was well. I am pleased to say all of the members are fully behind the emphasis and projects for this Rotary year. Many in the club have worked so hard over the last year preparing for our District Conference in September. Everyone has my deepest gratitude for the time and effort that has been put in to making this Conference a great success.

Another Monday comes around and I'm on my way to Peterhead accompanied by one of my club members Oliver Will. After a pleasant drive North on a rather nice summer afternoon we arrived at the Palace Hotel, home of the club for 44 years. We were greeted by President Ian Robertson and a few of the members. After a nice dinner I gave my address which was well received. The members although only 21 in number are very enthusiastic and are involved in a good few projects. The club are also the sponsors of the new proposed Mintlaw Club which is now almost up and running with over 20 members. Even though their numbers are small the club members enjoy their Rotary service and are trying to increase their membership. It is probable that the may have one new member soon.

Thursday morning at 6am I was once again on my way to Edinburgh airport, this time to catch my flight to Kirkwall. The weather was it's usual unpredictable self, however after a pleasant flight I once again arrived to a nice sunny morning in Orkney. The club meet in the rather nice surroundings of the Lynnfield Hotel which overlooks Kirkwall and has incredible views. I was greeted by President Bill Barbour and the members of the club. The meeting had a few visitors including PDG Ian Knight and his wife from District 9800 South Melbourne Australia. The club members enjoyed what I had to say and intimated their intentions to support the projects for this Rotary year. A great club with a diverse membership which is showing great signs of further growth for the future. I did not have time to see much of this wonderful place, but will remedy that soon when Rita and I will have a longer trip to enjoy these beautiful islands.

It's Wednesday evening I am now beginning to check my feet to see if they are becoming webbed, it's still raining. I have arrived in Monifieth at the Grange Golf Club for my next visit to the Rotary Club of Monifieth & District. On arrival I was met by President Angus Johnston and several of the members. Before the meeting began I was presented with a cheque for £1000 for PolioPlus which was later added to by a further £48 from a personal donation. The club have agreed to donate further funds to the project as and when they can. They have many new projects on the go including a possible Beach Clean Up. It was great to see so many friends that I have made over the years and to see them all in such good heart. I am sure this year will be another great year for the club. I look forward to working with them in Making Dreams Real.

Rotary Club of Stornoway (Visit No 43)

It's Tuesday and the start of another round of club visits, I have set of at 5:30 am in very rainy conditions to catch my flight to Stornoway. All was well at Edinburgh I departed on time and arrived in a sun drenched Stornoway to be greeted by the club's answer to Ant & Dec, Norman Macleod & Murdoch Macleod two of the nicest gentlemen I have ever had the pleasure to meet. They kept me entertained with their general good humour and banter whilst giving me a tour of part of the wonderful Isle of Lewis before taking me to the County Hotel where I was greeted by President Jane Campbell and several of the members. A super buffet lunch was followed by my address to the club which was well received. What a great club which is now beginning to grow with a possible intake of 4 or 5 new members shortly. After the meeting I was taken round the rest of the island by President Jane and Iain Macaulay before being taken back to the airport for my flight back to Edinburgh. A truly memorable experience I am looking forward to returning in April for the club's 50th Charter Celebrations.

Well it's visit number 42, just one short of the halfway mark and I am back en route to the North but only as far as Brechin. The club meet in the Springfield House where I was greeted by President Stanley Callaghan and the members. A great turnout of member was the order of the evening even though a few of them had already heard my sermon! and came back for a second dose. After a nice dinner (still eating) President Stanley inducted a new member, their first of this year, also I am assured that this is the first of many. If the fun and fellowship of tonight's meeting was anything to go by I am positive this will be the case. My address was once again well received with a few questions being asked. The club are in great heart and are seeing a revitalisation, I am looking forward to seeing them progress their ambitious plans for this year. The evening was rounded off by my presenting a Presidential Citation to PP John Glaister who accepted on behalf of IPP Liz Howson.

Lunch time looms, after fitting in some hours at work I have arrived at The Gilvenbank Hotel which is host to the Rotary Club of Glenrothes. This is really a home from home for me as I have known almost all of the members for many years now. After signing the visitors book I heard the booming voice of President Lars Christiansen greet me from the other end of the room. The club are as usual in great spirit with a packed programme of projects and plans for the ensuing Rotary year. President Lars thanked me for my address and assured me that the club would be fully committed to achieving the goals and challenges ahead of them. After a great meal some super fellowship it was back to work for the rest of the afternoon.

Its Thursday morning I have been on the scales, all is well, to my instant relief. Having left Aberdeen behind I am up once more up at the crack of dawn, Rita is back to work and I am visiting our newest club, the Rotary Club of Kirkcaldy Raith. President Stephen Rogers met me on arrival and it was not long before once again a few "weel kent" faces appeared. IPP Jacki Carnegie arrived with none other than Cadence who I had not seen since 2004-5, wow is she a little darling. After delivering my address I presented Jacki with a Presidential Citation for the clubs achievements last year. I am certain that this year will be a truly bumper year as the club begins to grow and mature. A great club with a great future ahead of them.

On arrival the smiling face of President David Alton met us. It was not to long before a few other "weel kent" faces appeared, and made us feel really at home. After many welcomes we sat down to a very nice lunch, my address was duly delivered and well received by an almost full club attendance, again this is one of our larger clubs. President David gave me the most humorous vote of thanks in the way only he can. This is a great friendly club fully committed to Rotary ideals, it will be my pleasure to work with them throughout the coming year.

Still Tuesday we have arrived on a rather misty evening at the Newton Arms in Newtonhill the home of the Rotary Club of Portlethen. Tonight was a change to the clubs normal meeting as they made the evening a partners night which was very nice indeed. After many introductions I was introduced to a fellow Fifer the clubs President Donald Robertson who is originally from Cupar in the heart of my own clubs area. The Newton Arms is deceiving to say the least the venue is cosy with great food and lovely modern decor. The evening was also enhanced by a visitation of a few Rotarian's from Brechin who were gluttons for punishment as I am visiting them on Thursday. The club members and their partners are very warm and welcoming, Rita and I were made to feel really at home. They are a small club but extremely commited and once again have a great array of projects on the go. I am sure they will have a bumper 2008-9.

Tuesday has brought as yet another nice day, after a relaxing morning we arrived at the Copthorne Hotel home of one of our Districts long established and larger clubs, the Rotary Club of Aberdeen. We were met by President Alastair Stenhouse and some of his team. Following a rather nice lunch I delivered my address which was well received by all present. The club as usual were in great spirit and have many projects ongoing at present and continue to make huge contributions to many Rotary causes. It's still Monday, however it is now early evening we have set out along the banks of the river Dee on our way through Royal Deeside. The club meet in the rather lovely surroundings of The Boat Inn in Aboyne. We arrived to be greeted by President Mike Powell and the members who made us immediately feel at home. The club, though still all male (watch this space) are having great fun doing what they do best, helping others. They have a huge raft of projects both Internationally and locally in progress and are continuing to achieve results already. They have committed themselves to reaching many new goals in 2008-9. I look forward to working with them and wish them great success.

Monday morning has dawned it is 7:30, another superb morning and Rita and I are off to Aberdeen for our first meeting of the week. We arrived at the Northern Hotel in Aberdeen to be greeted by President Ernie Forbes and many of the members of the Rotary Club of Aberdeen St Nicholas for their lunchtime meeting. Many of the members partners turned out to greet us and made us very welcome, especially Rita who had some great chat with many of the ladies. The club are certainly in good heart and found my address both interesting and inspiring. I was asked to erect the club's new plaque which is positioned in pride of place at the front door of the hotel. The club are finding it challenging to attract new members but are continuing to come up with some new untried ideas for recruitment. A very friendly and warm club who are definitely still enjoying Rotary.

Saturday saw Rita and I head for Wishaw in a dreadful rain soaked morning, however the weather broke and the day was excellent. We met up with my other Scottish DG colleagues, as all of the Scottish Districts sponsor the games. A huge amount of competitors from all over Scotland were there to take part in a rather moving day of fun and serious competition. We were privileged to meet some of the Rotarian's from Aberdeen accompanied by a recently honoured PHF in Morag Mitchell. After a great day of competition my colleagues and I were asked to present all of the medals to the winning participants. The day was rounded off when we were introduced to non other than Scotland's very own Yvonne Murray-Mooney MBE who was there to encourage and talk to those taking part. A tremendous day was enjoyed by all, what a really worthwhile event this is.

After a great relaxing day in Wick I was picked up from the hotel by President James Simpson and driven to The Pentland Hotel in Thurso where the club meet. After some great friendly chat and a superb meal I delivered my address to a very receptive group of Rotarian's. The club are extremely active in the community having just finished a beach clean up last weekend. Immediate Past President John Hook thanked me for my address and assured me the members were indeed positive about their intentions and goals for this Rotary year and hoped they would link in with my own goals. Again an extremely friendly club of good Rotarian's who I am sure will achieve much the year.

Wednesday has come around and I have set of to catch a flight to Wick in terrible wind and rain. On arriving at Wick the sun was shining and the forecast said more of the same due, great! Rotary Club of St Andrews Kilrymont (Visit No 30)

Would you believe it is still Tuesday, its now evening and Rita and I have arrived at the Scores Hotel in St Andrews the new home of the Rotary Club of St Andrews Kilrymont. Once again a great welcome awaited us from President Bruce Clark and the members. Tonight was another special night for me as the club were hosting the Fellowship Exchange Group from New Zealand who were now on their last visit before heading home. After yet again a nice dinner (the waistline is still bearing up) President Bruce inducted a new lady member to the club with some others on the sidelines. A brief presentation was given by our New Zealand visitors coupled with their thanks to all concerned for the wonderful hospitality throughout their stay. I thanked the team for choosing to come to our District and wished them well on their journey home on Friday. After delivering my address I was presented with two cheques from President Bruce one for PolioPlus and the other for Schools 4 All. This demonstrates the commitment of the club to achieving the goals for this Rotary year.

Tuesday morning has arrived and I am in Dunfermline at 7:30 am to visit the Rotary Club of Dunfermline Carnegie in their super new venue of the restaurant within the headquarters of Dunfermline Building Society. A great welcome as usual from the club with President Janet Lowe and Past President Cath Chorley at the door to greet me. I have to say that the hospitality in this venue is wonderful. A special day for the club as they were about to induct a new honorary member none other than the Chief Executive of Dunfermline Building Society Graeme Dalziel, who was very pleased to accept this honour and commented on how much he and the Society welcomed Rotary into their headquarters each week. Graeme said he would try to attend as many meetings as his busy schedule allowed.

Well it is the start of a new week once again and I have arrived in Kinross at the Windlestrae Hotel home of the Rotary Club of Kinross and District for my first visit of this week. I received a very warm welcome from President Malcolm Mapp and the members. The club are indeed a very friendly group with great enthusiasm. They have a full programme of events and projects for the ensuing year which will ensure that they have a superb year of achievement. My address was well received with the President promising that the club will rise to the challenges asked of them.

Rotary Club of Auchterarder (Visit No 26)

After leaving Elgin we were now heading South to Perthshire before returning to home. The Rotary Club of Auchterarder were our next port of call. A warm welcome awaited us on our arrival in the rather nice surroundings of the Cairn Lodge Hotel. President Brian Cashin and the members greeted us with a display of the many projects the club are involved with from Vision Aid to their NASWA International project, then after another nice dinner it was down to business, after my address there was a lively question and answer session. Once again a super club with a very full agenda for this Rotary year. I look forward to working with them in support of their efforts.

Rotary Club of Elgin (Visit No 25)

Thursday 31st July and we are on our way to visit one of our larger clubs, the Rotary Club of Elgin. On arrival at the Mansion House Hotel we were greeted by President David Sutherland and a few of the members. After a very nice lunch I gave my address which once again was well received by all. The club are well and truly dedicated to all of the challenges and goals for this Rotary year and have already committed funds to some projects. They have a very ambitious programme of International and locally based projects. Of course they still continue to furnish us with a drop of the "Amber Nectar" in the form of our Fellowship Malt. Once again this club continues to be one of the corner stones of our District. A great club with huge commitment, I know they will have a bumper 2008-9.

The Rotary Club of Spey Valley (Visit No 24)

On a lovely summers evening we made our way down to Aviemore to the home of the Rotary Club of Spey Valley. Aviemore was at it's best with throngs of holidaymakers everywhere. On arrival at the club we were met by non other than Secretary Bill McConachie who introduced us to a few of the members, one of whom I had not seen for many years my former bank manager Bill Templeton, Bill had moved up to Nethy Bridge when he retired from Leven. After a very nice meal and some great banter President Peter Davidson asked me to give my address, the members were suitably pleased with what they heard and promised to try and achieve some of the goals. The club though small is in great heart and are very active within their local community. They are about to induct a new member in the next week or so. A great wee club with a big heart.

Rotary Club of Loch Ness (Visit No 23)

After a relaxing stroll along the banks of the river Ness it was time to visit our next club. The Rotary Cub of Loch Ness who meet in the Waterside Hotel on the banks of the river Ness. On arrival we were greeted by President Jim Cockburn and a few of the members. This club is once again a great asset to our District with their whole programme of projects fully in tune with my goals and challenges. The club are enthusiastic well informed and will I am sure rise to all of the challenges ahead of them. I look forward to working with them during this Rotary year.

Rotary Club of Inverness Riverside (Visit No 22)

Wednesday morning has dawned it is 7:30, another superb morning and Rita and I are off to the Rotary Club of Inverness Riverside. Their venue brought back fond memories as it was here that I was let loose as a young trainer to deliver my first training course in 1973. The hotel still has that splendid charm and more, a wonderful setting indeed. The club are most certainly in good heart with President Ramsay McGhee proving to be a very inspirational President. After a nice breakfast I delivered my address which the club found inspiring and have agreed to try to achieve all of the goals I have set out in my challenge to them. A great vibrant club which I am sure will continue to go from strength to strength. I wait with interest to find out about their secret weapon for one of the up and coming events!!

Mike's Big Surprise

The Rotary Club of Inverness Culloden pulled off a very special surprise for Mike Phimister as I presented him with a Paul Harris Fellowship on behalf of the club. I have to say it is the first time I have ever seen him lost for words. Everyone knew about it except Mike even down to his family and children, a wonderful occasion for a well deserved recipient. Rita and I will remember the evening with great affection.

Rotary Club of Inverness Culloden (Visit No 21)

Our second visit of the day was to Inverness Culoden on a very warm and nice evening. A great welcome awaited Rita and I by firstly one of our District team Mike Phimister and Kathleen. President Rodger Hoskins and Linda then introduced us to all of the members and their partners as the evening was their monthly partners event. After a very enjoyable meal and some superb fun and banter I delivered my address which was again well received by all present. Once more this club are very committed to their goals and aspirations for this new Rotary year. I am sure they will have another bumper year.
