District Assembly Press Release

Following a fantastic District Assembly in the Rothes Halls, Glenrothes - this is the press release that was distributed around our district on Monday morning:
Fife Rotarian takes top job

Over 400 Rotarians from all over the north of Scotland descended on the Rothes Halls in Glenrothes this weekend to meet their new District Governor, local Glenrothes man David Rankin.

David Rankin will take shortly take over the reins for the largest and best performing Rotary District in the UK and Ireland from outgoing governor Clive Bartram in a few weeks time.

The new District Governor from the Howe of Fife Club, who recently returned from his Governors Training in San Diego with his wife Rita welcomed the other Rotarians to Glenrothes before outlining his plans for the forthcoming year.

Speaking to his 400 guests, many of whom travelled from the far north of Scotland, David proudly commented, “It is a pleasure and privilege to stand before you as your next District Governor, and I am honoured that so many of you have travelled from far and wide to come to Fife for my first address to you.

He outlined, “This year is a year of change in Rotary as we look to develop, improve, modernise and future-proof our worldwide organisation in preparation for the next generations.

“This year’s focus will be on children, with our message being to ‘Make Dreams Real’.

Many people in the assembly were astonished when Rankin gave then some worldwide statistics that had prompted this year’s key focus. He revealed, “Over 30,000 children die every day throughout the world from preventable illnesses, and we are going to contribute to the worldwide push to make changes by continuing to support Rotary’s humanitarian aid programmes throughout the developing world.

He continued, “In addition we will also work with other Rotary districts throughout the world to match the US$1,000,000 promised to us by the Bill and Melinda Gates foundation to fully eradicate polio throughout the world.

“Rotary has already played a primary role in removing 99% of polio in the world, and I am extremely confident that the North and East of Scotland can help assist in contributing to making this devastating disease a thing of the past.

Over the course of the forthcoming year the Glenrothes couple will travel many thousands of miles across the Country, but will also represent Scotland at other venues somewhat further afield.

Commenting on the next gruelling 12 months, David’s wife Rita said, “We have already started our travels having both recently been in America for our induction into what we can expect over the next year of so.

“We will be travelling all over throughout the North, South, East and West of the district. I will be travelling with David some of the time and I am looking forward to getting an opportunity to visit some of the clubs throughout the area.

She concluded, “It is going to be a busy, but exciting time ahead of us and I look forward to meeting some of the many people who travelled to Glenrothes this weekend on our club visits. I am obviously extremely proud that David has achieved this high office within Rotary and know that this means a great deal to him.

At the end of this weekend’s Rothes Halls sessions, the feedback was unanimously supportive to the route and direction this Fife Rotarian is taking his massive District.

Rankin ended his first meeting with his key Rotarians concluding, “It has been a pleasure to welcome you all to this fantastic venue of the Rothes Halls. I hope you have enjoyed your visit and look forward to welcoming you back to my home town at any time in the future.

“We are all aware that the statistics show our District is factually the best in the UK and Ireland and I am hopeful that we can take this and build upon it in the forthcoming twelve months. I thank you for giving me this opportunity to lead and you and can assure you that I won’t let you down.
